Are you considering a full-time move to Chelan? Before making the big leap, there are a few things you should know about how things are a bit different living here as a guest vs. full time resident. In this article, we’ll be sharing with you five things that my husband and I discovered when we moved from Seattle to Chelan. Whether you’re seriously considering it or just curious about our lifestyle, stick around to read more, or watch my Youtube video.
Here are five things we hadn’t considered:
- Healthcare
My husband and I were surprised to find that we had to be more involved in advocating for our healthcare than we did when we lived on the west side. There are three main facilities in Chelan: Chelan Health, Columbia Valley Health, and Confluence Health. While they all work together, sometimes they don’t communicate well with each other. We’ve had to be more proactive with our healthcare, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
- Online Shopping
Chelan has some great local shops, as well as a nice Walmart, but when it comes to online shopping, you’ll have to be patient. If you have Amazon Prime, you won’t get same-day or next-day delivery. It usually takes about two business days, but sometimes it can take longer. Plus, our post office isn’t open on Saturdays, so if your package arrives on the weekend, you’ll have to wait until Monday to pick it up.
- Dining Out
Chelan has some amazing restaurants, but many of our favorites are closed during the off-season, especially on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Be sure to double-check their hours before heading out or have a plan B.
- Climate
Chelan is located in north-central Washington, and it’s dry with a lot of dust. If you have sinus problems or issues with dry skin, be aware that it could bother you. It’s something I didn’t notice as much when we visited, but since we’ve moved here full-time, it’s become more apparent.
- Building and Home Projects
If you’re planning on doing any building or home projects in Chelan, be prepared for things to move at a slower pace. Some contractors operate on “Chelan time,” so it may take longer than you’re used to. Be patient and plan accordingly.
In conclusion, we hope these five surprises help give you a better idea of what to expect if you’re thinking about making Chelan your new home. As always, feel free to leave any questions or comments below!
